Caring for the planet
We do things differently at milli. We make delicious, one-of-a-kind plant mylks in our own special way. We’re also committed to being transparent about the environmental impact of making our products – starting with the carbon footprint of our almond mylk.
We determined through life cycle assessment that our current processes require 1.25 kilograms of carbon dioxide (COâ‚‚) emissions for the production and distribution of each pack of milli mylk Almond received at your door (enough to make 32 oz of mylk).
Lower COâ‚‚ emissions than other almond mylks
When you get our almond mylk at your door, you can rest assured that it has a lower carbon footprint per serving than a carton of cold almond milk from the grocery store. How much lower? About 3X lower!
A published study1 estimates that there are 3.7 kg COâ‚‚ emissions associated with production, delivery and storage of 32 oz of chilled almond milk. Almond milli mylk delivered to your door has 1.25 kg associated COâ‚‚ emissions per packet (equivalent to 32 oz of mylk).
How is milli mylk the better choice?
By delivering you a dry product, we skip the long distance cold transport and refrigerated storage that other store-bought milks require, while still offering you fresh, delicious mylk at home.
A bottle of almond milk you might buy at the store is mostly cold water. That cold water has probably taken a long journey from its source in a refrigerated truck, and hung out in a retail fridge for days. All of this takes a lot of energy and has elevated COâ‚‚ emissions2.
We use a freeze drying process to make milli. This helps us lock in flavor and quality for you and to tread more lightly on earth.
We've also taken care to choose a packaging material that goes easy on emissions. Our mylk packaging is compostable thanks to a unique biofilm we have carefully sourced.
How else do we take action?
So, our product footprint is lower than other almond milks, but there’s still an environmental impact of making our mylks. What are we doing to care better for people and the planet?
Offsetting our emissions
We pay to ensure that any emissions from making milli are balanced one-to-one with carbon removal or avoidance measures in the various locations where our emissions take place.
This means that for every unit of milli almond mylk sold, we pay to have that full amount of CO₂ removed from the atmosphere or prevented from being emitted elsewhere. We purchase carbon offsets from the portfolio of high-quality forest projects offered by Pachama.
Always improving
Our unique freeze drying process saves us a lot of CO₂ in getting product to you, but we can always do better. We’re working to reduce emissions from earlier stages in our supply chain and look forward to sharing our updated CO₂ figures when those changes are implemented.
Giving back
We’re also working to develop a robust portfolio of giving back initiatives that do good beyond just offsetting any harm. Keep watching this page for developments as we develop a thoughtful approach to using milli mylk for good.
